Richie is a very unique pup! He’s part Xoloitzcuintli and French Bulldog.
Richie is a happy guy that loves to make his foster family laugh. He is goofy and will purposely roll over and do silly things to encourage attention and laughter. He loves to follow his foster siblings and foster parent's around the house and make sure he misses out on NOTHING.
He does have a protective instinct and will bark at strangers or when he hears and sees people coming inside the home. This can be a common trait of Xolo’s because they are historically known as “watch dogs”. His barks do pack a big punch, but he is really a sweet toothless hunk of love once he knows everything and everyone is safe.
Young pups like Richie require a substantial amount of exercise and structured playtime. He loves squishy and squeaky toys and will suck on his favorite. When he gets excited or when he is happy he likes to put a toy in his mouth and will even hold on to it on walks or while he uses the bathroom. He has a larger than life personality!
He is a very odd pup when it comes to choosing furry companions. He loves any frenchie he’s met, seems to have a liking to small female dogs, but seems iffy on larger breeds. Richie’s foster mom believes that any openly friendly dog regardless of size and breed could become his best friend, he just needs proper slow intros and decompression. He wasn’t fond of his kitten foster sister his first week, but now LOVES her and plays with her every single day. It just took him some adjusting and slow introduction! His best friends are Emmett his frenchie foster brother and his kitten sister Freya the sphinx. He spends all day snuggling them, playing, and following them around the house. We think as a one and only he would be depressed without furry friends, so friends in the house is a must.
If that wasn’t enough to steal your heart his arguably best trait of all is that he gives the BEST cuddles. His foster mom says she has never met a dog that snuggles the way he does! He likes to tuck his head under your chin or into your neck and loves to be cuddled like a little baby. If you lay down, he will come running over to get directly on top of you or as close as possible. Snuggles are Richies favorite thing in the world. If he can’t cuddle with his foster parents, he is wherever his furry foster siblings are on top of them entangled in a ball of cuteness. He is VERY clingy.
Xolos aren't recommended for first-time dog owners. Without enough physical exercise and mental stimulation, he may become destructive or exhibit undesirable behaviors. They do have a protective tendency so this must have boundaries or it could become a problem in the future. Richie can be loud and bark around strangers, therefore slow introductions are highly recommended. He is not going to be a “social” dog that wants to say hi to every single that meets him. This means he also will bark and be loud at the vet, a coffee shop, or a brunch. These things will probably take training for him to be apart of.
Though Richie's grooming needs are minimal, he needs sunscreen applied to his skin to prevent sunburn if outside. To help keep his skin clear, he needs regular baths with special shampoo. Due to being hairless, Xolos are also prone to having sensitive skin. Care should be taken to ensure he is not exposed to chemicals, sun, or extreme changes in temperature. Doggy sunscreen and a pet-friendly moisturizer to keep their skin healthy is a must have.
So if you are looking for a pup with a heart as big as his tongue, Richie is the guy for you!
